The National Center to Reframe Aging — which provides expertise in effective communication strategies surrounding aging issues — has established a strategic partnership with SAGE USA. This collaboration aims to educate SAGE leadership and the SAGE National Resource Center (NRC) on LGBTQ+ Aging on the principles of reframing aging.

The National Center to Reframe Aging will be a strategic partner supporting the SAGE National Resource Center on LGBTQ+ in their efforts to reframe their education and advocacy communications on aging. The team will provide expert insight into the principles to reframe aging to enhance the advocacy for LGBTQ+ elders. SAGE NRC recently secured a U.S. Administration for Community Living grant to enhance services for minority aging populations through technical assistance, resource development, and program coordination. Specifically targeting the inclusion of LGBTQ+ elders, this grant empowers community-based organizations with essential knowledge.

As part of this initiative, the National Center to Reframe Aging will serve as a pivotal collaborator on the NRC advisory council, contributing its expertise to refine advocacy communications on aging.

“Effective framing is foundational to advocacy,” said Patricia D’Antonio, BSPharm, MS, MBA, BCGP, executive director of the National Center and the vice president for policy and professional affairs at the Gerontological Society of America. “Our team eagerly anticipates supporting SAGE USA in their efforts to advocate for older LGBTQ+ individuals.”

SAGE is a national advocacy and services organization that has been advocating with and on behalf of the LGBTQ+ community since 1978. It works with administrations and key staff in Washington, DC, Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Francisco, and a nationwide network of affiliates, to advocate for LGBTQ+ older people at the federal, state, and local levels.

“The SAGE NRC will use the lesson learned in developing new content that promotes social change through greater LGBTQ+ inclusion and counters ageism within the LGBTQ+ community and wider community,” said Sherrill Wayland, SAGE Senior Director of Special Initiative Partnerships.

The Gerontological Society of America (GSA) is the nation’s oldest and largest interdisciplinary organization devoted to research, education, and practice in the field of aging.
