El dominio básico del estudio de las ciencias sociales, según la teoría de la estructuración, no es ni la experiencia del actor individual ni la existencia de la sociedad como un todo, sino más bien prácticas sociales ordenadas a través del espacio y el tiempo. Las actividades sociales humanas son recursivas al igual que algunos elementos que se reproducen en la naturaleza.
Es decir, no son creadas por actores sociales sino recreadas continuamente por ellos a través de los mismos medios que les permiten expresarse como actores. (Giddens, 1984, p. 2; la traducción es nuestra).
