Iran Protests: Nationwide Demonstrations Highlight Economic Injustice and Suppression
Today, January 27, 2025, protests erupted across multiple cities in Iran today, as retirees, farmers, workers, and defrauded citizens rallied against the regime’s economic mismanagement, systemic corruption, and oppressive tactics. Demonstrations highlighted a variety of grievances, from pensions and wages to access to water rights and freedom from arbitrary arrests.
In Zanjan, northwest Iran, retirees from the Telecommunication Company of Iran (TCI) resumed their protests, calling for higher pensions and an end to mismanagement. Similar protests were held in Ahvaz, southwest Iran, where TCI retirees gathered to demand pension increases and better living conditions, chanting, “Gathering and protesting are our undeniable rights!”
In Sanandaj, western Iran, TCI retirees protested against corrupt management and inadequate pensions, echoing the frustrations of their counterparts in Ilam, western Iran, where protesters chanted, “We don’t want incompetent managers!” In Tabriz, northwest Iran, TCI retirees demanded swift action to address their economic grievances, chanting slogans such as “Retirees will not bow to oppression!”
Farmers in Khorasgan, central Iran, staged a sit-in to protest the government’s failure to secure their water rights. The protests followed a violent crackdown on Sunday by security forces, who injured several farmers and arrested at least one individual. Witnesses reported that the chaotic scenes involved farmers fleeing for their safety, with one vehicle carrying four farmers overturning during a police chase, leaving two injured. The area remains tense as farmers continue to demand justice and the release of detainees.
In Zahedan, southeast Iran, truck drivers rallied to protest discrimination and unequal treatment of drivers from the region. Meanwhile, gas refinery workers in Bushehr, southern Iran, protested against low wages and poor management, chanting, “Incompetent managers, resign!”
Retirees of the steel and mining industries continued their protests in Isfahan, central Iran, gathering in large numbers and chanting, “This government has no money for retirees; all the nation’s wealth is stolen!” In Ahvaz, southwest Iran, retirees demanded the government address inflation and uphold its promises, chanting slogans like, “Stop lying to the people!”
These protests underscore the regime’s ongoing failure to address critical economic and social issues, as dissatisfaction grows among various sectors of society. With tensions rising in cities across the country, the protests reflect a deepening crisis of public trust and highlight the resilience of Iran’s citizens in the face of repression.
