El envejecimiento, la auténtica bomba demográfica

El 15 de noviembre de 2022, la población mundial total superó la marca de 8.000 millones de personas. Para pasar de 7.000 a 8.000 millones se necesitaron tan solo 12 años, lo cual reavivó los antiguos temores asociados a un rápido crecimiento de la población: escasez de alimentos, desempleo galopante, agotamiento de recursos naturales y degradación descontrolada del medio ambiente.

No obstante, el reto demográfico más extraordinario que enfrentamos ya no es el rápido crecimiento de la población, sino su envejecimiento. Una buena preparación —que combine cambios de comportamiento, la inversión en capital humano e infraestructura, reformas políticas e institucionales e innovaciones tecnológicas— puede ayudar a los países a superar este reto y aprovechar las oportunidades que brinda el cambio demográfico.
