Pension giant and BNP Paribas AM unite for climate lobbying effort

AP7, BNP Paribas Asset Management and the Church of England Pensions Board have partnered with specialist advisory firm Chronos Sustainability to develop a framework to guide responsible corporate climate change lobbying The Swedish pension fund,

French asset manager and English group have teamed up to better assess whether corporate lobbying is aligned with climate change goals, as set out in the Paris Agreement. The project will develop on existing efforts to create a credible and systematic means of measuring lobbying.

This will allow investors and stakeholders to ensure companies are properly working towards the Paris Agreement goals. The project will identify how companies and their proxies exert influence on the policy process, which can either be through supporting or delaying climate-related regulation.

The research will also assess gaps in current practitioner approaches to lobbying and will develop a means for analysing, assessing and comparing corporate practices on lobbying.

The framework the groups are seeking to develop would include recommendations designed to feed into the Transition Pathway Initiative, as well as uncovering companies working well with trade associations and other bodies to push the climate change agenda.

The framework seeks to build on and complement the work conducted by InfluenceMap and others. It will be led by Dr Rory Sullivan of Chronos Sustainability and supported by Dr Richard Perkins from the geography and environment department of the London School of Economics and Political Science.

The project’s governance also draws on the insights of Ceres, IIGCC, and PRI.
